The Revolutionaries

Studio band

From
Kingston, Jamaica
Active
1970s

The house band at Channel One, and the group that pushed reggae from the one drop into rockers. Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass for much of it, and a rotating cast around them.

Their method was to recut Studio One rhythms with the harder new drum feel, which sounds like an act of vandalism and turned out to be an act of renewal. Those recuts became standards in their own right.

Almost every dub record made in Jamaica between 1975 and 1979 is built on something this band played.
