Artist

Joe Gibbs

Producer

From
Montego Bay, Jamaica
Active
1960s to 2008

Joel Gibson started out repairing televisions and ended up running one of the most productive operations in Jamaican music. What made it work was his partnership with the engineer Errol Thompson: billed together as the Mighty Two, they turned out records at volume without letting the quality slide.

The African Dub series is where most listeners meet them. It is playful, sometimes gimmicky, and completely assured, full of sound effects dropped in with perfect timing. Alongside that ran a stream of roots vocal records that stand with anything from the period.

Gibbs died in 2008. Thompson, whose hands are on the mixes people remember, died in 2004 and is still not credited as widely as he should be.

Twelve dub records, in order

A route through dub itself rather than through reggae: twelve albums in sequence, from the first tentative experiments to the point where the method left Jamaica altogether.
