Errol Thompson

Engineer

From
Kingston, Jamaica
Active
1960s to 2004

Errol Thompson is the engineer behind an enormous amount of the music people credit to somebody else. Working with Joe Gibbs as the Mighty Two, he mixed the African Dub series and a large part of the roots catalogue that came out of Gibbs’s operation.

His mixes are cleaner and wittier than the Kingston norm of the period, full of sound effects dropped in with comic timing: telephones, sirens, a flushing toilet. It could have been a gimmick and mostly is not, because the placement is so precise.

He died in 2004 and is still not credited as widely as the work deserves.
